Martindale-Hubbell has been well-known for evaluating the strong legal ability and high ethical standards of American attorneys through a Peer Review Rating system for well over a century. Their 1887 edition of Martindale’s American Law Directory was the first publication to provide attorney ratings. Before this, there was no way of truly knowing if the attorney you were thinking about hiring was skilled in their chosen legal field, ethical, or trustworthy.

Their mission continues today by providing verified ratings for attorneys that include their legal abilities and ethical standards as determined by their peers and based on reviews from their former and current clients. While the standards and format of the Peer Review Rating system have progressed significantly since its inception in the 1800’s – the purpose remains the same: Provide the public trusted information they can use when they need the services of an attorney or law firm.
